| Yesterday’s Komikon was both fun and tiring. I get to stalk see different artists.
It was rather different, and somehow I miss Bahay ng Alumni. :”( Although the event hall was supposedly air-conditioned, there were just too many people! And the place isn’t as big as BnA. “oTL It’s rather hard for me since I really hate SUPER crowded place. I’ve got too many bad experiences in those things. I’m so glad I saw Yun-yun who was a marshall again for LunaRock. And as usual (whenever we’re together) I cling to her like the leech I am. XDDD Ahaha, para lang may karga-karga siyang nawawalang bata. lol~ After she left me (yah, she has no heart ;A; /jk) Wylz appeared!
After we’ve talked (mostly about Funny Komiks) my new friend Poland arrived. :3 It was our first time to meet. He was already infront of me, but I still doubted if it was really him. (Just like the creepy stalker I am, I observed if he was gonna text me or not /brick’d) We compared our works, shared our drawing experiences, and discussed how awesome Funny Komiks is! Hell yes, we’re die-hard AX Princess fans. <33333
After a while, I left the guys. Walk around the hall, and ogle at the tables. O u O (Yes, I’m a creepy girl)
The things I bought at Komikon yesterday.
Ever since I’ve first saw Mel Casipit’s work at Metro Comic Con 2008, I was already attracted to him his works. (>///u///<)b I get to read his work from Wylz. I didn’t have money back then, so he lend me his copy. :D
Then at Summer Komikon of this year, I attended it for the sole purpose of buying his works. Baboy Issues 1 & 2 were bought at that con. Yesterday I bought EDSA and Komikon Comic Creation Entries, and a poster.
Mel is such a nice guy. He talked to me about his comics, and how (and supposedly when) he made it. It’s actually the first time I got to talk with him in personal in real life. I was too shy back then to stay too long at an indie booth.
There is just something in his works that are very moving. For example are Baboy and MLU. He doesn’t need to put speech balloons or even thought balloons to let the readers know what is happening in the story. Each panel holds an action, an emotion. The art isn’t as confusing as you thought it would be without any dialogues. The story flows smoothly.
When I first read the first issue of Baboy, I felt like I wanted to cry. The story is so touching. Yes, the boy may not be a human but he has our so-called human emotions. And through those eyes of his, through his transformation, I can feel the sorrow, anger and anguish that are bottled up inside of him.
In MLU (Madramang Lambingan sa Umaga) is super cute and fluffy (I hope he won’t kick me for describing it as fluffy). ^ ^ It’s like your typical smitten young boy defending his lady-love. But it comes with an unexpected twist! And painful to the chin may I add.
Then there’s Dogstyle which is such an enjoyable reading! :D I wanna let my little cousin see it (since she’s a dog-lover) although I’m not so sure if I can let her…since the first part of KCCC is Baboy and it contains violence. “oRZ (my mom might scold me if I showed her Baboy)
On the other hand, EDSA contains more dialogues. It’s rather funny because Randy Valiente’s (the writer) plot jives so well with my thoughts regarding politics. Aaaand I will cut that just like that. XDDD As much as I want to elaborate those thoughts, I’m still wary of cyber libel. >,> I’ve got reprimanded before my majors professor about it.
I’m not so sure if Randy knows about it, but there’s actually a real person who did and experienced the same thing as Piolo. I’ve read about it before when I was still in grade school. It kind of stuck in my head because I store really weird things in my Pentium 1 brain. The ending of the other individual was different. He left his family and he only returned to them after so many years (he was deported in another country or so during Martial Law). The sad thing about it is, his wife had already started a new family. She thought her husband was killed too by the government.
Decafclub’s Butter∫Sweet Book 2 is just a feast for my shoujo-fangirlism. I first saw/skim-read their Book 1 from chicharon during MCC 2008. I asked them if they still have a Book 1, it so happens that Book 1 is available online. ; w ; (a printed copy of mine would be nice too)
The stories just make me wanna know more of the characters! Since it’s not a one-shot comic, I can still expect some more. How I wish Ethan would find more ways to torment play with Dale. Will Al and Dean get a manry duel? XDD It holds so many promises, and I’m already excited to see its continuation.
And I’m NOT putting any pressure on Decafclub’s main story writer, Maria Cecilia "Chie-Chie" S. Hibo. :)) Clarice "Saowee" Menguito’s art so pretty! It’s so crisp. The tones look pleasing to (my) eyes. It doesn’t overpower you nor does it look too flat. And you can distinguish one character from another (unlike some comic, the characters almost all look the same).
The second story, The Soul, is a light-read. From childhood friends to lovers? *grins* Alexa Joy "Lexie" Nino’s story and art is simple and direct to the point. I wish she could have done was make full use of tones. I know it’s hard to do all of the comic creation alone, and kudos to her for making this comic. The way I (and Wylz) sees it, the whole comic look too flat. In the first few panels, Ken’s hair was depicted to be darker than Aya. But then on halfway, they have the same hair tones. Page 4 could have use the same hair tones as on the first page. I’m not sure but I guess it’s because she use more BG tones on that page come across as flat.
Then there’s the third and last story, Book Club. Somehow, I see some similiraties with tone use of Saowee in here. I guess that’s because she helped Lanie "Lylanee" Macabare in here. I love her use of tones and shadows in this story. No matter how gay she talks in their artist page (I had difficulty decipthering it), I like her character design. I just hope it would not turn into something like High School of the Dead (reading and watching zombie-centric manga/movies are common to me so I have a tendency to compare and contrast notes).
Yup, I spotted Meru’s art! :3 Sadly, I have no clue about Stride’s first book (would have been nicer). The good thing here is this story can stand on its own too. It’s a sweet shotacon story. ;//u//; AND I ABSOLUTELY LIKE THEIR COSPLAYS!
It isn’t a cluttered comic, which makes it a lot better, but the details are still wonderful. Awww…I wish I could buy the first book.
I also bought Terra Incognita from the same table as Meru’s. It was more of a LOL moment for me when I was looking around at their table. The salesguy was telling me to buy this shounen-ai manga. LMAO~ He’s just epic win! And yah, he showed me the *uhmp* parts. It’s funny because I happen to know someone just like him. One who gets into the juicy parts first then reads the other details later.
The artist of this comic is named Neko-san and there weren’t anymore details about him/her. The designs of the panels are confusing and looked too cluttered. Although it seems like a promising story, the whole outlook of the page isn’t too pleasing to the eyes. I get distracted, the box panels comes in different volumes and sizes. One line overshadows the other. The placement of dialogues is confusing as well. The characteristics of the people are a little disorienting. Raz just lost his lover, Kane, and then he flirts with Black so fast! Even if it’s a shounen-ai comic, it still lacks reality. >,> I think only a douche bag would do something like that.
I got this (sketch) as a freebie since I bought a more than a hundred at their table (that I have no clue what group/org it is). The artist (?) who made it had no idea who Izaya was. It was a good thing the Izaya keychain I bought from Meru was attached to my wallet. XDDD
I’ve received a calendar from the Revel Productions’ table. Although I neglect looking at a calendar, I guess I’ll keep it an album. ^ ^;; (I’m the type of person who doesn’t bother to know what the date is)
Wish (left side) is a dark, sci-fi comic from Linanne Fe R. Pineda. I had no idea it was Kinjiru’s work! Lucky me for grabbing this baby~ The style looks so different from what I used to see from her before. It has turned manry and sexy. *smirks*
I like the story (not because it was Kinjiru) but because of humane inside this dark story. Yes, the cyborg was created as a bio-weapon but Reiko’s emotions remained intact. She was the one who gave Kinjiru a second chance to believe in “humanity”.
The letter-in-the-bottle was a nice touch up! Augh…now I also wanted to know what Reiko wrote exactly. ;A; I have a speculation, but I may be wrong.
On another unrelated note, the eye-removal panel is my fave. If you know me in RL, you’ll know why.
The other comic, Yukishiro, is one heck of laughter-ride. :)) Filled with bishounens and an androgynous princess Marie Eleanor M. Licuanan has a very wide and weird imagination.
It’s a spin off the famous Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, where the dwarves are all hot men (especially Grumpy) and the wicked step mother is a vain step dad. From start to end, you’ll go snickering in the crazy antics Dada has in store for poor lil Yukishiro. The front cover may look simple but the art inside is just so beautiful! Reverse-harem results to loads of laughter. (Still lolling on the piggy part)
And the King’s magnificent curly hair is just to die for! ROFL
This one I bought from the Mythrill table. The cover page caught my eye. *Q* It’s beautiful. Reiko Okeda’s art fits to be the cover page.
However the comic itself, Daemon, is rather confusing. Halfway of the story, I got lost. The rain scene, I don’t quite fully understand it. Was Xy vanishing or was that just a printing problem? And just what is Xy? o_o
The next story is My Sleeping Princess which is a funny love story. Sino ba naman ang maglalagay ng pampurga sa pagkain para lang hindi gutomin estyudante mo? lol Somehow, I think I’ve saw Kurumi Ayu’s art style before, not so sure where exactly. ^^;;
The third story is made by Nathan Tobi entitled Saltless Peanut. I like this one the most. It’s easy to read, and has a very good plot. Hmm…how should I put it? The style reminds me so much of I”S. Crisp, clean, and pleasing. What I find disturbing here is the unrealistic story of Ruth. Three years of using drugs and you still have your sanity intact? I think three months of continuous usage will make you a “drug addict” and will surely make you delusional. How Ruth was able to maintain her sanity and fight drugs for all those years is beyond my understanding. T_T Sorry but I think it takes more than one night to make a drug user give up his vices.
Yoru: The Moon is the fourth story in this book, made by Bloodfeather. The first half of the story was nice and the paneling is good. The other half…it got confusing. Who was the girl that “entranced” Zephi? Did she hypnotize him? And I got really confused with Kien and Zephi’s relationship, are they lovers or was it just one-sided? Argh…I really wanna know more of it. Sadly it’s only a one-shot. There still some questions left unanswered here.
The last story is Codename: Venus made by Haro Silverstin. The art is simple, the action scenes are good. Since most the scenes are nighttime, the toning came out as monotonous. All black and grey. It was good and bad at the same time.
Well know I’m done doing the reviews. n_n)v
I hope to see more beautiful comic next Komikon! |
